RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare anxiety and acute stress levels among nursing students who joined the labour market during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic   and those who did not. METHODS: A cross-sectional, multicentre descriptive study across three Spanish public universities. A total of 216 nursing students participated in our study. Data collection was carried through an online questionnaire, that included variables on conditions for entering the labour market, the Zung Anxiety Self-Assessment Scale and the Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire. We performed univariate and multivariate analyses.  Results: Overall, 42.6% (n=92) of the students entered the labour market during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The global anxiety score was x?=36.31 (SD=5.71) and the stress score was x?=82.39 (SD=30.84). Lower anxiety levels were observed among those who joined the labour market (x?=35.67; SD=5.78) as compared to those who did not (x?=36.73; SD=5.67). Overall 92.4% of the students were acutely stressed. Acute stress was higher among those who did not work (x?=84.35; SD=32.38) and significantly in women.  Conclusions: Nursing students were able to cope with stress in situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic. A healthy worker effect could not be ruled out. Stress and anxiety among nursing students should be considered by clinical practice preceptors and at the time students first enter the labour market.

Objective: to understand the competence level achieved by Nursing Degree students in their fourth year for addressing gender-based violence, and to compare their competence level with that acquired by first year students.Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study. Study population: 1st and 4th students of Nursing Degree at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Madrid, Spain). Data collection: validated questionnaire Physician Readiness to Manage Intimate Partner Violence Survey (PREMIS).Results: 47 Nursing students; 96.1% in first year and 85.7% in fourth year were female. 80.8% (n= 21) of first year students and 57.1% (n= 12) of fourth year claimed that they had never received any training on Intimate Partner Violence against Women (IPVAW) before starting their degree. 52.4% (n= 11) of fourth year students stated that they had received theoretical training vs. 34.6% (n= 9) of first year students; and 23.8% (n= 5) of fourth year students had received practical training vs. 3.8% (n= 1) of first year students. Students in their fourth year achieved higher scores in those items related to self-perception of their skills of action towards the victim, and knowledge about the IPVAW. In first and fourth year, they identified that being a woman was a top factor of risk for suffering abuse. Students from both years felt less qualified to complete the legal requirements associated with abuse reporting. Conclusion: the implementation of a teaching guide improved the ability of students to detect cases of IPVAW, showing the difficulties to apply the knowledge acquired into specific scenarios. RESUMO

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: To describe the experiences of nursing students and their mental health as they entered employment during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic (May-June 2020). BACKGROUND: As other healthcare professionals, nursing students who worked during the first COVID-19 wave suffered from dysfunctional mental health symptoms. DESIGN: Sequential, mixed-method, multicentre study. METHODS: The study population comprised 92 students in the third and fourth year of the Nursing degree at three Spanish universities, who entered employment during the pandemic. Data were collected between May and June 2020. In the quantitative phase, data were collected using an online questionnaire containing both validated anxiety and stress scales. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 participants. A descriptive analysis of the quantitative data and a reflexive thematic analysis of the qualitative data were carried out, and analyses were combined. COREQ checklist was used for reporting. RESULTS: The combined quantitative and qualitative results were organised into five thematic areas: (1) Interruption of clinical placements, (2) Entering employment on a healthcare assistant contract, (3) Preventing contagion, (4) Adapting to the situation and managing emotions, and (5) Lessons learned. CONCLUSION: The students had a positive overall experience of entering employment, as they were able to develop their nursing skills. However, they had an emotional impact in form of stress caused by excessive responsibility, academic uncertainty, lack of personal protective equipment and training in its use, and the possibility of spreading disease to their family members. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: In the current context, changes must be made in study programmes to instruct nursing students to be able to cope with extreme clinical situations, such as pandemics. The programmes should include a more extensive coverage of epidemics and pandemics and management of emotional aspects such as resilience.

Objectives: to analyse the role of professional Emergency Nurses regarding psychosocial care for adolescents with attempted suicide.Method: a narrative review was conducted in the Pubmed, Cinahl, Cochrane and Scopus databases, using free and controlled language, and establishing filters for publication data (last 10 years) and language (English and Spanish). Results: in total, 253 articles were retrieved, and 14 were finally chosen which met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Four categories were formed from the analysis of these 14 articles: interventions by Emergency nursing professionals, coping strategies for parents, prevention of relapses and, finally, the importance of training on mental health for Emergency nursing professionals. Conclusions: attempted suicide is still a stigmatized subject with poor visibility. There is lack of resources to offer quality care in mental health. Nursing professionals play a major role regarding the coping process of parents, who need support to guarantee the safety of their children. Undergraduate training on mental health must be improved, due to the limited current access to specialized training through mental health residency.(AU)

RESUMO

Although previously developed qualitative studies have explored the experience of illness of individuals with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, these findings have not been undertaken for the purpose of enabling the identification of nursing care needs in such patients. This study aims to identify NANDA-I nursing diagnoses of adults with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome based on a qualitative literature review of their experience of illness. The protocol includes: searches in the electronic databases Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI, SciELO, LILACS, and Cuiden; and manual searches in specialised journals and the references of the included studies. The authors will systematically search qualitative research studies published in databases from 1994 to 2021. Searches are limited to studies in Spanish and English. All stages of the review process will be carried out independently by two reviewers. Any disagreements shall be resolved through joint discussions, involving a third reviewer if necessary. The findings will be synthesised into a thematic analysis informed by the Domains and Classes of the NANDA-I Classification of Nursing Diagnoses, which will then serve to identify nursing diagnoses. This review will enable nursing professionals to identify the care needs of individuals with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome by taking into consideration their experience of illness in its entirety.

Introduction: Fatigue is an important health concern that requiring appropriate assessment, diagnosis and nursing care planning focused on those who suffer from it. Objective: To validate the content of NANDA-I nursing diagnosis of fatigue (00093) in the version included in a clinical database. Methods: Descriptive and exploratory study of diagnostic content validation by experts following Fehring's proposal. The setting of the study was Spain. Data collection was carried out between June 2019 and March 2020. The participating experts had experience and training in the use of standardized nursing languages. Results: Of the thirteen characteristics that define the diagnosis included in the database, seven were validated as major, five as minor and one was not validated. All sixteen related factors of the diagnosis were validated. The content validity index of the diagnosis was 0.81. Conclusions: The diagnosis obtained a high content validity index. The components of the NANDA-I diagnosis of fatigue (00093) in the clinical database version correspond with those present in the NANDA-I diagnosis of fatigue (00093) in the NANDA-I Classification 2018-2020. The current research is considered to contribute with an increase in diagnostic accuracy by identifying key defining characteristics for the diagnosis. At the same time, it validates related factors that have an influence on the diagnosis but are not incorporated among the components of the NANDA-I diagnosis of fatigue (00093) in the 2018-2020 edition of the NANDA-I Classification(AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic is a public health challenge that puts health systems in a highly vulnerable situation. Nurses in critical care units (CCUs) and hospital emergency services (HESs) have provided care to patients with COVID-19 under pressure and uncertainty. OBJECTIVE: To identify needs related to safety, organisation, decision-making, communication and psycho-socio-emotional needs perceived by critical care and emergency nurses in the region of Madrid, Spain, during the acute phase of the epidemic crisis. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study (the first phase of a mixed methods study) with critical care and emergency nurses from 26 public hospitals in Madrid using an online questionnaire. RESULTS: The response rate was 557, with 37.5% reporting working with the fear of becoming infected and its consequences, 28.2% reported elevated workloads, high patient-nurse ratios and shifts that did not allow them to disconnect or rest, while taking on more responsibilities when managing patients with COVID-19 (23.9%). They also reported deficiencies in communication with middle management (21.2%), inability to provide psycho-social care to patients and families and being emotionally exhausted (53.5%), with difficulty in venting emotions (44.9%). CONCLUSIONS: Critical care and emegency nurses may be categorised as a vulnerable population. It is thus necessary to delve deeper into further aspects of their experiences of the pandemic.

Aims: The proposal of the manuscript is to provide a methodological reflection on the use of photo-elicitation as a data gathering strategy to explore vulnerability management among homeless women. Methods: A grounded theory study was carried out. Photo elicitation was one of the data gathering techniques used between February 2015 and February 2017. Five women were selected through intentional sampling. All of them were over 18 years old and residents in 4 shelters within the Madrid Care for the Homeless network. Participants used disposable cameras or mobile phones to record their experiences living in the shelters or on the street through photographs. An interview was conducted with each participant in order to explore the meaning of the photos after they were developed. Data analysis comprised, firstly, describing the obvious content of the photos and, secondly, comparing it with the latent content provided by participants during the interviews. Results: Only 3 women finished the task. Through data analysis some theoretical proposals were discovered, which contributed to a deeper knowledge of some previously established categories and subcategories such as: ‘The good professionals’, ‘The safe places in the street’ and ‘The threats in the street’. Conclusions: Photo-elicitation enabled an approach to participants’ experiences with minimal imposition, allowing them much of the control over the data production. RESUMO

Through data analysis some theoretical proposals were discovered, which contributed to a deeper knowledge of some previously established categories and subcategories such as: "The good professionals", "The safe places in the street" and "The threats in the street". CONCLUSIONS: Photo-elicitation enabled an approach to participants' experiences with minimal imposition, allowing them much of the control over the data production. However, it is a demanding technique that requires deep reflection before its implementation, on the part of both participants and researchers.
